Soundtrack
Hamhock and Slide have a very distinct sound that they call “Cracker Blues.” They were generous enough to let us use their music when I told them that their sound was “perfect” for our documentary. That slide guitar and southern lyrics really fit the mood of the doc.
I found Hamhock and Slide by the grace of lady luck. I was working on the documentary “Chiefland” and found that I needed a certain sound to complete the mood I was creating when editing. I knew I wanted slide guitar but where was I going to find someone to play it for me? At the time, I was living downtown in Gainesville Florida and decided to go for a walk with the sole intention of finding my muse. I walked around for a little bit when I heard something… I heard my guitar gently weeping from a club. I walked closer to the club, hypnotized by the sound of that slide guitar and ended up standing in front of The Side Bar with my mouth ajar. In the club, there was one man singing while playing the acoustic and one playing the slide guitar. Eventually I shook off my hypnotized state and decided to walk over to the club and ask about the two gentlemen playing. The man at the door told me their name was “Hamhock and Slide.” He gave me their website information and after sticking around for a little while longer I walked home and looked them up.
After a few days, I got the courage up to call and ask them to meet. They said yes and at the meeting I told them I wanted them on the soundtrack for our doc “Chiefland.” But first, I told them the story of how I found them and became the guy on the street staring into the club. They actually remembered me! From then on we have remained good friends and I have been a BIG fan of their music ever since.
